I got asked this question on a blog discussion board: “It is easy to see the Old Testament standard/expectations for giving, but what would you say is the ‘New Testament’ Standard of Giving?”
A great question. Here is the best answer I can come up with: Spend time in God’s Word and God’s presence and ask the question, “Is my life and faith (not just my finances) about getting what I can for myself, or giving what I can to bless others for the glory of the One who has been immeasurably generous to me?” Then, listen. This is the “fulfilment of the Law.” Praise God who did not spare His own Son to save sinners. Generosity, under the new covenant, must be a natural extension of Christ within our hearts. If you haven’t read my “Philanthropy or Christianity?” post, check it out to get the reason why a follower of Christ should see a sense of generosity gradually gaining control of his heart and soul.
