Christianity and Politics

What political beliefs should true Christians carry?  The old adage comes to mind, “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread”!  No, this post is not a rant of “proper” Christian political beliefs.  Instead, I am going to pass on a piece of wisdom I heard a while back in a sermon.  The pastor quoted Jesus’ words to Pilate:

“My Kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.” (Jn. 18:36)

I think there is a lot of wisdom in this short answer when it comes to Christian’s involvement in politics.  We should be positive, vocal, active, articulate, intelligent, passionate, involved, and dynamic forces for change in our culture, but we never must be decieved into thinking that our kingdom is in this worldThe more one becomes involved in social change, the greater the temptation to become more concerned with redeeming society than redeeming souls.  Always give priority to the “realm” which lasts into eternity.

Secondly, I find a number of believers who find the political arena a place to passively profess their faith.  They will sign a petition, write their representative, or vote against same sex marriage, but they will not talk to their neighbor about God’s design for sexuality.  We must remember that Christ always appealed to the individual not the corporate.

So, I challenge all Christians to feel free to be passionate about politics, but always bear in mind the following two items:  1. Remember that your kingdom is not of this world.  2. Seek to profess your faith on an individual and corporate level.
