Starting the post category “Book Corrections” made me realize I should take a moment to discuss its purpose. It begs the question, “Is Dollars and Doctrine perfect?” The obvious answer to this question is “No.” Being somewhat of a perfectionist, and mulling over the two years that I spent putting the book together, that is a hard thing for my flesh to admit. That being said, I do ask you to consider the following points.
1. Dollars and Doctrine represents more of a “macro” than “micro” approach to Biblical stewardship. The old cliché of “forests” and “trees” would apply here. Sure, we can disagree about bits and pieces of sentences, clauses, and statements, but the overall picture that Dollars and Doctrine presents regarding the Bible’s teachings for our financial management is sound, solid, and dependable.
2. I am just a sinner saved by grace who wrote a book. As I mention in the introduction: “You should read your own Bible to gain a clear understanding of [Scripture's] context, rather than rely solely upon the quotation of an author.” (xiv)
3. Surely I could have spent four years instead of two putting the book together and likely would have resulted in a “more perfect” version, but to do so I run the risk of losing sight of the forest for the trees. To a certain extent (and please don’t misunderstand me), the deeper one digs into the details, in some ways the harder it becomes to see the overall picture. (And the longer and more laborious read the book would become). I have found that there are people who want to argue with me to the bitter end about some small qualification that bears no impact on the greater cause of the Gospel. It reminds of this Spurgeon quote: “Too often those who cull the relics of antiquity with enthusiasm, are thoughtless about the present, and neglect the practical duties of daily life. Their learning may open up dead languages to those who will never derive any living benefit from them.” – Charles Spurgeon (Sermon No. 320)
4. I hope this category of posts shows that I am willing to hear wise council and constantly refine my understanding of God’s truth. Feel free to let me know your disagreements, but back up your words with scripture.
