Simply as a matter of curiosity, you might have wondered why the tax structure in America does not tax ministers. The idea comes from the Judeo-Christian roots of our country. This type of tax was not permitted in the Old Testament: “We also inform you that it is not allowed to impose tax, tribute or toll on any of the priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, Nethinim or servants of this house of God.” (Ezra 7:24)
The phrase “does not tax ministers” is quite misleading. What I meant was there are definate and noticable tax “breaks” to ministers. And this distinction was originally made based on the teaching of Scripture. Yes, ministers still pay taxes, but there are certain tax breaks available to them such as: the ability to deduct housing from income, or the ability to opt out of social security. Sorry for the poor wording, and thanks to “Super Saver” for pointing this out to me.
