Timeless

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:8)

Just last night I was reading a few articles in a nationally acclaimed financial magazine.  I have had a subscription to this specific magazine for around 3 years and have been generally pleased with it; however, last night as I sat scanning the latest advice I was hit with a very stark realization.  While reading the last few issues, I have been at a loss of words at how much the content of this particular magazine’s financial advice has completely changed over the last few months.  In light of recent economic slowdowns, it would appear this magazine’s writers have changed their entire financial philosophy “overnight.”  Any financial expert would surely rebut that we live in a different financial world now than we did three years ago (I am not sure whether or not I agree with that statement yet.)  Either way, it caused me to see a literal manifestation of the truth of God’s word in our current world, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands FOREVER.”  The Bible gives us solid, consistent, and timeless financial principles.  These principles do not change in seasons of economic boom or economic gloom.  God’s word is our only source of unchanging, reliable truth.  Magazines are not.  Bookstores, magazines, and the media industry in general will simply say whatever sells or sounds good at the time.  We can’t really blame them for seeking profits, but God’s word has a different agenda- truth.  We can find truth that is consistent, meaningful, purposeful, and eternal in His book.  Let us look there for principles and precepts, not the ever changing, ever evolving movement of the media industry.  Just because a book is a best seller or has shown relative success, “the flower fades.”  In all of its glory, the flower still fades, “but the word of our God stands forever.”
